GfK Consumer Confidence Index October 2023

  • GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index dropped nine points in October to -30
  • All five measures were down compared with last month. 

General economic situation 

  • Consumers’ measure of the general economic situation over the last 12 months is down seven points at -54. This is 15 points higher than the same month a year ago (October 2022). 
  • Expectations for the general economic situation over the coming 12 months decreased by eight points to -32. This is 29 points better than the same month a year ago. 

Personal finances

  • The personal finances index covering the last twelve months decreased six points to -19, nine points better than a year ago.
  • The forward-looking measure for personal finances over the next twelve months decreased six points to -8, which is 26 points higher than the same time last year. 

Major purchases

  • The Major Purchase Index fell 14 points to -34. This is seven points higher than the same month a year ago.

Savings Index (not included in the overall measure) 

  • The Savings Index is down two points at +25. This is 12 points higher than a year ago.
