GfK Consumer Confidence Index May 2023

  • GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index increased three points in May to -27
  • All measures were up compared to last month.

General economic situation 

  • Consumers’ measure of the general economic situation over the last 12 months rose one point to -54 in May. This is nine points higher than the same month a year ago. 
  • Expectations for the general economic situation over the coming 12 months are up by four points to -30. This is 26 points higher than the same month a year ago.

Personal finances 

  • The personal finances index covering the last twelve months rose one point to -20, two points better than a year ago. 
  •  The forward-looking measure for personal finances over the next twelve months increased five points to -8, which is 17 points higher than the same time last year.

Major purchases 

  • The Major Purchase Index increased four points to -24. This is 11 points higher than the same month a year ago.

Savings Index (not included in the overall measure) 

  • The Savings Index is unchanged at +19. This is nine points higher than a year ago.
