GfK Consumer Confidence Index March 2023

  • GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index increased two points in March to -36. 
  • Three measures were up, one was unchanged and one was down compared to last month.

General economic situation 

  • Consumers’ measure of the general economic situation over the last 12 months rose three points to -62 in March. This is 13 points lower than the same month a year ago. 
  • Expectations for the general economic situation over the coming 12 months are up by 3 points to -40. This is nine points higher than the same month a year ago.

 Personal finances 

  • The personal finances index covering the last twelve months remained the same at -26, 13 points lower than a year ago. 
  • The forward-looking measure for personal finances over the next twelve months decreased three points to -21, which is three points lower than the same time last year.

Major purchases 

  • The Major Purchase Index increased four points to -33. This is nine points lower than the same month a year ago.

Savings Index (not included in the overall measure) 

  • The Savings Index increased by two points to +21. This is three points higher than a year ago
