GfK Consumer Confidence Index January 2023

  • GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index decreased three points in January to -45, 26 points lower than a year ago.
  • Four measures were down, and one was up, compared with last month.

General economic situation 

  • Consumers’ measure of the general economic situation over the last 12 months fell five points to -71 in January. This is 24 points lower than the same month a year ago.
  •  Expectations for the general economic situation over the coming 12 months are down by one point to -54. This is 22 points lower than in January 2022.

 Personal finances 

  • The personal finances index covering the last twelve months decreased three points to -31, 25 points worse than a year ago. 
  • The forward-looking measure for personal finances over the next twelve months increased to -27, which is still 25 points lower than last January.

Major purchases 

  • The Major Purchase Index decreased by six points to -40. This is 30 points lower than the same month a year ago.

Savings Index (not included in the overall measure) 

  • The Savings Index decreased by six points to +14. This is one point lower than a year ago.
