GfK Consumer Confidence Index December 2023

  • GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index increased two points in December to -22 
  • All five measures were up compared with last month.

General economic situation 

  • Consumers’ measure of the general economic situation over the last 12 months is up by five points at -44. This is 22 points higher than the same month a year ago (December 2022). 
  • Expectations for the general economic situation over the coming 12 months increased by one point to -25. This is 28 points better than the same month a year ago.

 Personal finances 

  • The personal finances index covering the last twelve months increased two points to -14, 14 points better than a year ago. 
  • The forward-looking measure for personal finances over the next twelve months increased one point to -2, which is 27 points higher than the same time last year.

Major purchases 

  • The Major Purchase Index increased one point to -23. This is 11 points higher than the same month a year ago.

Savings Index (not included in the overall measure) 

  • The Savings Index is up two points at +27. This is seven points higher than a year ago.
