GfK Consumer Confidence Index December 2022

  • GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index increased two points in December to -42, 27 points lower than a year ago.
  • Three measures were up, one was down, and one was unchanged compared to last month.

General economic situation 

  • Consumers’ measure of the general economic situation over the last 12 months increased by one point to -66 in December. This is 27 points lower than the same month a year ago.
  • Expectations for the general economic situation over the coming 12 months have improved by five points to -53. This is still 29 points lower than in November 2021.

 Personal finances 

  • The personal finances index covering the last twelve months decreased four points to -28, 23 points worse than a year ago. 
  • The forward-looking measure for personal finances over the next twelve months increased remained at -29, which is 30 points lower than last December.

Major purchases 

  • The Major Purchase Index increased four points to -34. This is 28 points lower than the same month a year ago.

Savings Index (not included in the overall measure) 

  • The Savings Index decreased by one point to +20. This is six points higher than a year ago.
