GfK Consumer Confidence Index April 2022

Headlines:

  • GfK’s Consumer Confidence score fell to a near all-time low in April, dropping seven points to -38. 
  • All five measures were down, including an eight-point drop in the major purchases index

General economic situation

  • Consumers’ measure of the general economic situation over the last 12 months fell nine points to -60 in April. This is two points lower than the same month a year ago. 
  • Expectations for the general economic situation over the coming 12 months fell by six points to -55. This is a staggering 44 points lower than April 2021. 

Personal finances 

  • The personal finances index covering the last twelve months fell six points to -19 in April, 16 points worse than a year ago. 
  • The forward-looking measure for personal finances dropped eight points to -26, considerably weaker than this time last year. 

Major purchases

  • The major purchases index fell eight points to -32 in April, a further indication that consumers plan to cut back on discretionary spending. This is 20 points lower than a year ago. 

Savings Index (not included in the overall measure) 

  • Consumers’ propensity to save fell in April, with the savings index declining by eight points to +10. This is 12 points lower than a year ago.
