GfK Consumer Confidence August 2026

  • The GfK Consumer Confidence Index increased three points to -14 in August, its highest level for two years.
  • Four of the five measures improved compared with last month.

General economic situation

  • Consumer perceptions of the general economic situation over the past 12 months decreased one point to -40, two points higher than a year ago.
  • Expectations for the general economic situation over the next 12 months increased five points to -23, seven points higher than August last year.

Personal finances

  • The personal finances index for the past 12 months increased two points to -6, two points lower than August 2025.
  • Expectations for personal finances over the next 12 months increased three points to 4, one point lower than this time last year.

Major purchases

  • The Major Purchase Index increased five points to -7, six points higher than August last year and its highest level since December 2021.

Savings Index (not included in the overall measure)

  • The Savings Index decreased five points to 22, eight points lower than the same time last year.
