DIY & Gardening Sales
DIY & Gardening rose 00% YoY in June according to the Retail Economics Retail Sales Index (value, non-seasonally adjusted).
Retail Economics estimates DIY & Gardening inflation was 00% YoY in June, while ONS data shows the wider Household Goods category faced 00% YoY shop price inflation, pointing to a decline in sales volumes.
Record temperatures cause sales to soar
DIY & Gardening sales were helped by record temperatures in June, which was the sunniest since 1957.
Households spent more time outdoors as a result, leading to strong sales of gardening products.
Outdoor plant sales increased 27.1% YoY in June, while garden sundries and hard landscaping sales were up 14.1% YoY and 9.95% YoY respectively.
Homewares giant Dunelm saw a boost in sales of garden furniture and decorations in the month.
Housing market under pressure
After half a year of steady recovery, the housing market experienced significant setbacks in June.
UK house prices fell on an annual basis in June (-2.6%), the largest decline since 2011 (Halifax).
Indicators for buyer enquiries, price expectations, and sales expectations declined sharply in June, bringing an end to half a year of steady improvement.
As a cooling housing market leads to fewer property transactions, DIY & Gardening sales will be negatively impacted.

Retail Economics forecasts DIY & Gardening sales to dip 00% YoY in 2023, with sales totalling £00bn. This comes on the back of a 00% sales decline in 2022.
Over the medium-term (2023-2027), Retail Economics forecasts DIY & Gardening sales to grow by a CAGR of 00%, reaching total sales of £00bn by the end of 2027.
Retail Economics forecasts online DIY & Gardening sales to rise by 00% in 2023. Online penetration will remain well above pre-pandemic levels, at 00% of total sales.
