UK Homewares Sector Report summary

Homewares retail sales surged 00% year-on-year in March, value and non-seasonally adjusted, according to Retail Economics.

Online Household Goods sales growth increased by 98.8% year-on-year in March, according to the ONS. While this is lower than February’s record high (172%), it still represents stellar growth and further evidence of the impact of store closures

Homewares sales were up 00% on a two-year, pre-pandemic basis in March, according to Retail Economics.

With shoppers planning for spring and post-lockdown living, consumers turned to supermarkets for household goods as non-essential stores remained closed. Supermarket sales of home (+61%) and garden items (+92%) collectively increased to £175m in March, according to Nielsen.

Average weekly sales for Homewares was £00m in March, according to Retail Economics.

Cookware, tabletop and decorative items also reportedly performed well in March, as consumers geared up for being able to host friends and family in their gardens, following the easing of lockdown restrictions.

Consumers have delayed purchases of items during the latest lockdown in anticipation of store reopening. Our own research shows that 00% of consumers claimed to delay spending on home related products in March until stores reopened.

Online accounted for 35.8% of total Household Goods sales in March, up from 22.2% a year earlier, and 13.0% in March 2019 pre-crisis.

Average weekly online spend was £246m in March, double the amount recorded in the same month a year earlier.

Sales of household goods at large retailers grew by 24.2% year-on-year in March (ONS).

Sales of household goods at small retailers were up 21.3% year-on-year in March (ONS).

Retail Economics forecasts Online Homewares sales to fall by 00% in 2021.

Online fashion retailer Boohoo launched its first-ever homewares collection, selling bedding, home fragrances and other interior products at competitive prices.
