Health & Beauty sales rose by 00% in August YoY from a weak 5.0% decline a year earlier.

The performance of the category is improving as social spending and footfall recover.

The lifting of restrictions has seen consumers do more activities when venturing out, bringing some return of the bustling nature of high streets in August.

Footfall has improved but remains 18% down on 2019 levels, dragged down by city centres where footfall remains under heavy pressure as home working persists (central London still down 38% on 2019 levels).

GfK’s Consumer Confidence measure saw vast improvement over Q2 2021 as restrictions eased on the back of the strong vaccine rollout.

However, confidence of late has stalled, as rising inflation and fears of another wave of the virus undermines the lifting of restrictions.

With physical in a state of flux and online gaining traction, retailers are ultimately looking to join the dots between established physical habits and new found online experiences.

This has seen Boots enter a trial partnership with Deliveroo to offer rapid delivery on a range of more than 400 Health & Beauty products – serviced from 14 Boots stores.

Retail Economics forecasts Health & Beauty sales to rebound over 2021, growing by 00% YoY to reach just under £00bn, returning close to 2019’s pre-pandemic levels.

Sales of health and beauty products is expected to bounce back over 2021 once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted. As people return to work and more social events take place, demand for ‘out-of-home’ categories will pick-up considerably.
