Electricals sales rose 00% year-on-year, and 00% on a two-year pre-pandemic basis in May, according to the Retail Economics Retail Sales Index (value, non-seasonally adjusted).

Retail sales predictably rebounded in May against weak comparisons from the same month last year when sales fell by 9.0%. May’s retail sales performance fell short of expectations in what was the first full month of “non-essential” stores being open this year.

00% of consumers said they spent less on retail items in May as a direct impact of hospitality reopening (research from Retail Economics).

Despite significant improvements in consumer confidence in recent months, now at the highest level since the pandemic broke in February 2020, many people remain anxious about shopping in physical locations.

Retail Economics research found that less than 00% of UK households shopped in-store for electrical items in May.

After a year of surging sales driven by increased working from home, demand for laptops and office equipment is beginning to wane. That said, the category is still trading above 2019’s pre-pandemic levels, and with many businesses expected to implement flexible working policies on a permanent basis, growth prospects remain solid.

TV sales picked-up in May ahead of the much-anticipated appearance of the home nations (England, Scotland, Wales) at the delayed Euro 2020 football championship.

Online Electricals sales fell by 6.0% year-on-year in May, according to IMRG. However, this is against extremely tough comparisons from 2020 when there was a huge shift to online.

Dixons Carphone announced it will rebrand its four businesses (Currys PC World, Carphone Warehouse, Team Knowhow and Dixons Carphone) to Currys. The company plans to invest £25m over the next two years to reward and upskill its 12,000 workers.
