UK Electricals Sector Report summary

Electricals sales fell 00% YoY in June, according to the Retail Economics Retail Sales Index (value, non-seasonally adjusted) against a 0.5% decline a year ago.

Value growth continues to be supported by surging inflation with volumes under considerable pressure. Comparing inflation rates of a basket of electrical items suggests inflation is 00 00% within the category.

The sector remains under pressure from muted demand and ongoing supply chain disruptions. Whilst pressures within supply chains have improved in recent months, costs remain elevated, weighing on retailers margins.

The month begun with the four-day Jubilee bank holiday weekend, creating a temporary feel-good factor amongst consumers with street parties and gatherings popular, boosting Food performance.

But celebrations were short-lived. Pressure on budgets intensified as annual inflation hit the 40-year high rate of 9.4%, supported by surging food and fuel prices.

Food inflation accelerated 9.8% YoY in June, the sharpest rise 00 00 00. Forecasts suggest it could reach an eyewatering 00% later this year.

A further blow was felt when fresh pressures on oil prices resulted in the biggest daily jump in petrol prices in 17 years.

Confidence was bruised, falling to a fresh record low of 00 with sentiment for personal finances and prospects for the economy weak.

Prospects for consumer spending weakened considerably with demand within the category muted against the tough backdrop.

00 00 00 00 00 were said to be experiencing weak demand with trading down to cheaper brands continuing as consumers try to stretch budgets further.
