DIY & Gardening sales growth fell by 0.00% YoY in September, against a 0.00% rise a year ago.
September was anticipated for when life edged towards more ‘normality’ with workers returning to offices as children went back to school at the end of the summer holidays.
However, pressure piled on consumers as the month progressed, derailing spending.
Against the backdrop of rising cost pressures, category performance suffered, ending a 16-month run of consecutive rises in sales growth as attentions shifted away from home-related purchases.
This was particularly apparent during the fuel crisis where cars were reserved for essential journeys only. The typical retail park locations for many DIY and Gardening retailers was unfavourable in this regard.
The well-documented supply chain disruptions and cost price inflation are generating a significant upside risk to performance well into 2022.
Key raw material costs have risen by some 0.00% while shipping costs have soared 235% according to the Baltic Dry Index, adding considerable pressure to retailers’ operating costs.
