Clothing & Footwear Sales

Clothing sales increased 00% YoY in June, with Footwear growing by an even stronger 00% according to the Retail Economics Retail Sales Index (value, non-seasonally adjusted).

Price rises are lifting retail sales in value terms. Stripping out inflation, Clothing & Footwear retail sales volumes rose by an estimated 00% and 00% YoY respectively in June. This still represents healthy growth, considering most retail sectors are seeing declining volumes.

Riding the wave of a restriction-free summer

Despite cost of living pressures, holidays remain high up the agenda for most households this summer. Coupled with warmer weather and Jubilee festivities, the need to refresh summer wardrobes boosted Clothing & Footwear sales in June.

In what is the first summer in three years with no Covid-19 restrictions, consumers are prioritising spending on holidays and social occasions, which in turn is supporting demand for Clothing and Footwear.

At a category level, holiday essentials such as swimwear and sandals performed well in June, while outfits for weddings and parties also recorded robust growth.

Sector outlook

Fashion retail has enjoyed a stellar bounce back over the last twelve months, but the autumn and winter season is set to be more challenging, as energy and food bills rise, leading consumers to cut back on discretionary purchases.

Among non-essentials, clothing and footwear is at the top of consumers’ cut back priorities. Our research shows almost 00 (00%) of UK households plan to reduce their spending on fashion due to the cost of living crisis.

The average household is projected to cut back 00% (00 00) of their annual clothing and footwear spending this financial year (to April 23).
