Claimant Count

The Claimant Count measures the number of people claiming benefits principally for the reason of being unemployed; since October 1996 this has been the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA). Some JSA claimants will not be classified as unemployed. For example, people in employment working less than 16 hours a week can be eligible to claim JSA depending on their income.
